Watercolor Workshop with Dale Laitinen

September 7-12, 2008

Dale Laitinen is best known for his watercolor paintings of the mountains and deserts of the Western United States. He is drawn to the topography of exposed rock which manifests itself as light catching ranges of mountains, deep canyons and broad expanse. Traveling through the landscapes has made a strong imprint on his paintings. It is a large open expanse of the contemporary American West that Laitinen finds most compelling. In addition to being influenced by the natural landscape he finds aesthetic value in the altered landscape of dams, bridges, highways, etc.

Dale originally studied forestry but found the chain saw much more cumbersome than watercolor brushes. He studied with Dan Petersen at Modesto Junior College and N. Eric Oback at San Jose State University, graduating in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. He has been featured several times in The Artist's Magazine and Watercolor Magic and his paintings have been featured in Splash 1, 3 & 4 published by North Light Books and The Transparent Watercolor Wheel. He has written several articles about his painting technique and is widely sought as a teacher.

Laitinen is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. He has conducted workshops in the United States and France. He is represented by several galleries in Northern California and lives and works in Mountain Ranch, California.
