The possibility of transformation of body, mind and spirit
drew Kathleen Miller to yoga over thirty years ago and has continued to
inspire her ever since. The profound power of this exhilarating yet
peaceful practice to enhance all facets of life became the core of her
teaching and life. Emphasis on yoga's broad scope followed naturally from
her background as a dancer, exercise physiologist and Feldenkrais
teacher as well as her longtime spiritual practice.
After finding yoga masters from the revered Krishnamacarya lineage,
Kathleen began two decades of study with the foremost of these American and
Indian teachers, T.K.V. Desikachar, AG Mohan, Erich Schiffmann and Gary
Kraftsow. In the course of her study she became an editor for T.K.V.
Desikachar and Kausthub Desikachar, and eventually edited Mohan's Yoga
for Body, Breath and Mind, now in its seventeenth year of publication.
During her twenty-four years as a teacher she has taught throughout the
United States, but presently focuses on her private yoga therapy practice,
group classes and workshops in Santa Rosa, California. She also lectures
and conducts teacher trainings in California and nearby states.
Curiosity and Delight - Retreat and Exploration through Viniyoga
The ultimate goal of yoga is to be so fully aware in each moment that we
act in ways that nurture or delight us rather than cause us
suffering.
In this retreat we will explore ways to access and expand those areas of
life and ourselves that enhance our experience of life. These will include
asana (postures and movement), pranayama (breathing techniques,) chanting
or sound, meditation, reflection and ritual as well as the use of our
beautiful Silver Lake surroundings. Everyone will take home some quick,
simple techniques to keep the nurturing of delight present in their
everyday lives. Each day will also include discussion, some brief
explanation of traditional yogic principles as they apply to this topic,
and undoubtedly a lot of laughter as we explore the ever-surprising effects
of curiosity and delight together.
The word viniyoga comes from Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,
the classic ancient text that describes yoga and its ultimate purpose of
ending suffering. It describes intelligent adaptation of practice to each
person. Thus viniyoga varies all segments of a program (postures,
breathing, meditation, etc.) to suit one's aims, preferences, body,
state of health, personality, as well as external factors like occupation,
lifestyle, season, climate, etc. Practice must feel good while it's
happening and also have positive and lasting results.
No yoga experience is necessary. Practices will be adapted to be valuable
for all students. (There will be no advanced asana practice as the focus is
far broader than a body workout). A list of what to bring will be provided
to once you've registered.
