“Fall Foliage Photography Workshop” with Roy A. Clifton

October 7-10, 2008

Not every photograph can be a “keeper”.  Even professionals cannot make every image a winner.  However, every photographer can improve image quality.  How?  By continually learning and using new techniques.  By pre-visualizing how they want an image to look and then utilizing all of the tools and capabilities at their disposal to make that image match their vision.  And, finally, by taking images and evaluating them to understand what could be done better.  Better choice of subject?  Better exposure?  Better composition?  Better usage of tools?  Better choice of lighting or time of day or season?  Better perspective using a different lens?

Roy has been a part-time, professional freelance photographer for over thirty years.  He does portraiture, wedding and sports photography, but prefers photographing the great outdoors in the Sierras.  Roy has pursued his avocation in the highest (Mt. Whitney) and lowest points (Death Valley) in the contiguous forty-eight states and additional sites in North America, Asia and Europe.  He uses digital, 35mm and medium format equipment as appropriate to the image’s end use.  For many years he and his wife, Janet, have worked extensively in the Silver Lake to Carson Pass area.  Their three children and occasional guests are frequent hiking participants.  He has studied in the field with Bob Evans and in the classroom and the field with Barbara Brundege.

Roy’s work can be seen seasonally at The Silver Lake Art Gallery.

Workshop

Start October 7th, Tuesday 7:00 pm
End October 10th, Friday at 12:00 noon

This workshop will focus (pun intended) on two primary activities.  The first will be creating images outdoors at some of Roy’s favorite fall imaging locations.  While outside, there will be directed shoots (homework) as well as time to create our own images from our own perspectives.  The second activity will be indoors at the lodge.  During our indoor time, we will discuss how to use the equipment we have to maximize the image creating experience.  We will also talk about what tools and equipment would allow us to expand our capabilities.  Time will be spent evaluating and critiquing attendees’ images (for digital shooters) and talking about how those might be improved.  We will be shooting and critiquing every day.

Come prepared to have an enlightening experience and learn how to put some real punch in your images.  Make sure you know how your equipment works when you arrive.  This workshop is for improving your image taking, not for teaching you how to use your equipment.  Film and digital shooters are welcome but the discussions will favor digital shooters.

Workshop will be divided into morning, afternoon and evening sessions (hours to be determined by the instructor) Wednesday through Friday. There will be a Tuesday orientation from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm as a preparation for the workshop. List of materials, tools and other necessities for participants to bring is available upon sign up.

Cost $300 per person. There is a 10% discount for “Early Birds”. Check Participants Info for details. Hurry up! Space is limited to 8 participants. There is a minimum of 6 participants for the workshop to take place. If the minimum is not met, the workshop may be cancelled.

To enroll, please call us at (209) 258-8500 or fill in the registration form and fax or mail to us.
