Winter at Kit Carson Lodge

During the winter season, the Lodge closes
its facilities except for Polar Bear Cottage. The Cottage sits on the edge
of frozen Silver Lake, isolated from the highway, peaceful and very
comfortable. Polar Bear is available for rent mid-November through Memorial
Day. Surrounded by spectacular peaks rising from the 7300 foot lake
elevation, Polar Bear Cottage is situated at the west end of the resort,
closest to Highway 88. Winter guests park near the highway and proceed on
foot, snowshoes or skis for the 400 yards to Polar Bear Cottage’s
front door. The caretaker is usually available to help you bring in your
supplies.

Polar Bear is a 6-person cottage with 2
bedrooms (one with a queen size bed and the other with two twin beds);
there are also 2 studio couches in the living room. The cottage has a
bathroom with shower only and a fully equipped kitchen, stocked with
cookware, dishes and the basic cooking/kitchen condiments and staples. Bed
linens, bath and kitchen towels and paper products are provided. And for
your evening pleasure there are books, board games and TV with VCR and DVD.
Firewood is provided and the cottage also has a propane furnace.

The beauty of Polar Bear is in its surrounding area that is
incredibly majestic and quiet when the entire landscape is laid to rest
under a mantel of snow. When you snowshoe or ski right out your front door
along the forested edge of Silver Lake and you are the only ones out there
you will discover that winter is the unforgettable time at Silver Lake.
